Disk partitioning is not a task we do often, but it is one of the first and foremost task that we do when we buy a new PC, hard drive or even install a new operating system. Partitioning your hard drives tells your system to treat various portions of your hard drive as separate entities. This allows you to keep your system and program files separate from your personal data. You will less likely lose your personal data if you ever need to reinstall the OS or reformat the system drive due to malware attack and system failure.
Partitioning tools that ship with the OS might not be enough for most users, as they offer limited features. Third party programs, such as EaseUS Partition Master on the other hand offers a complete set of tools to take care of all your partitioning needs. Partition Master is available in two editions for home users, free and professional. As you may have expected, the professional edition offers more features than the free counterpart.
Features only available in pro:
- Resize dynamic volume
- Migrate OS to SSD/HDD
- WinPE bootable disk
- Command line
- Business usage
- Support for hard drives up to 16 TB
Features available in both free and pro:
- Resize/move partitions, merge partitions, split partition
- Disk & partition copy
- Convert dynamic disk to basic, primary partition to logical, logical partition to primary
- Recover deleted or lost partitions
- Support MBR & GPT disk, hardware RAID, removable device
- Convert MBR system disk into GPT
The installation process is straight forward, and does not bundle any kind of toolbar or unwanted adware. On startup, the program detects all the hard drives attached to the system, including external drives and lists them on the main window with their drive letter, label, file system, total capacity, used space, free space, status, type and disk map. The interface features a menu bar and toolbar at the top, available operations of selected drive/partition on the left sidebar and pending operations on the bottom of the left sidebar.
The operations list is smartly generated and the options available for the selected partition/drive may vary. For instance, when we selected our system drive, the program did not show the hide drive, change drive letter or format drive options – knowing that these operations are not possible on the selected drive.
Partition Master Professional is capable of deleting partitions, creating partitions from unallocated space, resizing or moving partitions, merging two adjacent partitions, defragmenting, hiding partitions, setting partitions as active, converting primary to logical, along with MBR to GPT, NTFS to FAT32, and vice versa. Moreover, it includes disk clone, partition copy and partition recovery tools that are guided by a detailed step by step wizard.
The program does not carry out tasks instantly, instead all the operations that you have performed are queued in the pending operations list. You can later review the operations and execute all of them sequentially. This allows you to get away from the system while all your operations are being performed. It is also rather recommended to stay away from the system while your hard drive is being restructured. If the partition is locked (currently being used by the system or some other program) then it may ask you to restart your system to complete the desired operation.
EaseUS Partition Master Professional is compatible with the latest Windows 10 and all prior releases of Windows operating systems: 8.1, 8, 7 and XP. For technical specifications, check out this page. Windows 8 (64-bit) support is not listed on that page, but we tested the program on a 64-bit Windows 8.1, and did not run into any kind of issues.
