PowerArchiver is one of the top compression software available on the market today. It offers a range of compression and decompression options and is compatible with quite a number of archive extensions. You can open, create, convert or extract all of the popular compression formats and more.
At first glance, we notice the attention paid to appearance and customization by the manufacturers to give the user a bit of aesthetic freedom, but most importantly, this does not affect the actual functionality of the software. The full PowerArchiver Toolbox includes a host of tools, compression and encryption features, but we will be looking at the Standard edition of the program today since it is currently being given away free of charge.
The program has an intuitive interface, offering options that vary in suitability according to the experience of the user. There is the option to choose either novice or advanced display mode. As the name implies, the novice mode targets users with little or no experience to the functionality of the program, so it is easy to maneuver through.
The advanced interface has three-stage support for skinning. These include skinning for the interface itself, the icons and the file format icons. There are 10 in-built skin options to choose from, and more are available for download from the manufacturer’s website.
Interestingly, there is also an advanced modern ribbon interface – licensed by Microsoft – that makes the program look just like any other Windows ribbon application. A preview pane lets you preview files before performing any actions on them. We noticed that this preview pane includes a native PDF viewer that dispels the need to use another third-party PDF viewer. It is a nice little tool to have because you can view or print your PDF file straight from that window.
The software supports and is able to extract up to 60 different possible archive formats. The program can create/open ZIP, ZIPX, 7-zip, PA, LHA, TAR/GZ/BZ2/XZ, CAB archives. Other formats are limited to opening and extracting only, which include the following: RAR, ACE, ISO, MSI, ARJ, NSIS, DMG, CHM, CPIO, VHD, LZMA, XAR, WIM, SquashFS and a host of other formats. However, do note that RAR archives can be created with PowerArchiver if you have WinRAR installed. This comprehensive list already places it among the very best compression/decompression software.
Key Features at a glance
- Intuitive interface with varying options
- Supports up to 60 different compression formats, including the Advanced Codec Pack (currently the most advanced compression format)
- Full support for RAR format – Including compression if WinRAR is installed.
- Preview panel that includes a PDF viewer
- Low memory usage
The software is compatible with almost all version of Windows. These include Windows Server 2003, 2008, 2012, 2016, Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and Windows 10.
Power Archiver Standard Edition holds its own compared to more popular alternatives (such as WinRAR). It manages to squeeze in a few extra features too – there are the interface options and the PDF viewer that we like. Overall, it performs very well and promises even more with the full toolbox.
