Zoom Player is a media player for Windows that is available in two different editions, Free and Max. The Max edition offers a lot more features over the free edition, such as the ability to download subtitles from opensubtitles.org using media metadata, YouTube media library integration, support for DRM windows media, customizable mouse gestures, automatic audio/subtitle stream selection and support for Blu-ray disk playback with subtitles.
Irrespective of the edition you choose, the player offers extensive support for video and audio formats. Some of the key formats supported include MP4 (H.264, H.265, WebM), AVI (XVID, DIVX), Flash Video (FLV), Windows Media (WMV/ASF), and QuickTime (MOV/HDMOV) in video and MP3, Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC), Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), Windows Media (WMA), Dolby Digital (AC3), and Digital Theater Surround (DTS) in audio.
During installation, the wizard will ask you to select the components that may be required for playing certain file types and internet streams. If you are unsure what to select, make sure you select all of the available components, as we found that most of the components are necessary for proper functionality. Only exception is, if an upgrade to recent version of Zoom Player Max is available. In that case, uncheck the recent build. Since this is a special full version build, updates are not available. If you decide to update, you may have to purchase a license.
The program has a familiar looking interface with the timeline seeker and playback buttons below the playing area. You can drag and drop files for playback, open them via the file browser, or use media file associations to use Zoom as your default player.Access to advanced options and features is provided by the right-click context menu.
Media library displays local videos that are located on Windows music, picture and videos folder, plus you have the option to use the provided media scanner to add videos to your library. There is an online library as well which does not seem to be updated, and shows the same collection of videos. Support for streaming allows you to view live channels and videos from sites like YouTube.
Playback experience can be customized and completely controlled by keyboard and mouse. For instance, you can seek forward and backward, increase and decrease volume using just the arrow keys.
Almost all aspects of the program can be controlled using the keyboard. Pre-defined shortcuts are available for play / pause playback, toggle full screen mode, keep the program on top, sync audio, frame capture, increase / decrease brightness, contrast, gamma, hue, saturation, zoom, and many more. The pre-defined shortcut keys can be viewed by navigating to Options – Keyboard – Shortcuts. Please note the shortcuts sub menu is missing in basic mode, so make sure you switch the options panel to advanced mode to view all the available settings.
The program features a dedicated audio mode that can be easily enabled by using the toggle button on the top left corner of the interface. The audio mode hides the preview window and only shows the playback navigation buttons. This mode is excellent for music playback as you can drag the program to edge of the taskbar, set the program to stay on top and easily switch between audio tracks.
Like most of the other media players, Zoom Player can be skinned. You can download additional skins by navigating to Download – Additional Skins from the context menu.
To conclude, Zoom Player has all the characteristic of a premium media player, but its interface needs some tweaks as it conceals some of its features. Tools such as the one to create ringtones could not be found anywhere on the context menu, but can only be accessed by using the default keyboard shortcut (CTRL + E).
